Blood Oath (Shadow Ancient Series)
This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Aug 26, Patricia rated it it was amazing. Book 2 of the Shadow Ancients trilogy by Cammie Eicher is wonderful. The world of the Ancients is fascinating and no detail is left out. Again Cammie hit one out of the ballpark. Bring on Book 3! The flood of vampire novels over the past few years had me running screaming to the nearest book store exit - until I found 'Blood Oath'. The James Bond with pale skin and a sensitivity to sun light But then wore shades at times didnt he? Hell's Belle by Cammie Eicher
It seemed as if the author felt the need to throw in a gratuitous sex scene just because these days it seems to be expected. However, this is nothing more than a very small speed bump in an otherwise great ride. I understand this is first in a trilogy and the movie rights have already been optioned. I hope the author will give more attention to some of the characters receiving minimal realestate in the first outin - such as Tania, the female vampire who shares a history with Cade.
I'm looking forward to the next in the series. Jan 06, Dane Jackson rated it it was amazing Shelves: So far, this is my favorite debut novel of even though it hasn't come out yet. If you ask me, those three traits are the equation for a great book.

Th So far, this is my favorite debut novel of even though it hasn't come out yet. This is the beginning of a great series. I can't wait to see what Farnsworth does with the characters next. Cade is a newly-formed vampire about to be executed when President Andrew Johnson pardons him. I love political thrillers and this has black ops, treason, betrayal and vampires. Books written by journalists always tend to be better written, because they know how to tell a story efficiently without falling in love with their own words. I loved most of the Jason Bourne books, and the movies as well.
Certain lines will have you racing to Google and then laughing once you realize what it really means. I could also see almost every scene in my head as I read along, so clear and descriptive was the writing. We could spend hours discussing the casting for when this is made into a movie — and I do hope it is made into a movie. Emile Hirsch also does angst well. He plays the smug know-it-all well. Evan Rachel Wood has to be Tania. Sink your teeth into this one, with relish! May 24, Steph rated it really liked it Shelves: Blood Oath is a fantastic opener to what promises to be a fun new series.
I love dark UF and this was so new and different that it was a joy to read. We are introduced to Zach Barrows, not yet thirty years old and already the deputy director for White House affairs. He's very sure of himself and confident in his job at the White House. That is until he's reassigned. He thinks the reassignment has come because the Secret Service caught him with the president's nineteen year old daughter in the Blood Oath is a fantastic opener to what promises to be a fun new series.
He thinks the reassignment has come because the Secret Service caught him with the president's nineteen year old daughter in the Lincoln bedroom. All of his confidence runs out of him as he pisses himself seeing Nathaniel Cade, the President's Vampire, for the first time. Griff updates the newbie on the history of the man that literally scared the piss out of him. He had apparently killed several of his crewmates.
The corpses were bloodless, except the one that the young man held in his arms. He was still drinking from that one. They called him a vampire. He was convicted, and sentenced to be executed. He lived out the rest of his days in an insane asylum, until , when he died. At least, that was the official story. In fact, the young man really was a vampire.
And Johnson only pardoned him so he would work for the United States. For the past hundred and forty years, it's been his job to defend this nation against the threats from the Other Side. They invade, we repel. Forget the War on Terror, Zach. And you've just been drafted. This also puts him under Cade's protection, meaning he can't hurt him. Zach tries to deal with his new "business partner" while they go on their first mission together. Body parts are showing up at customs in freezers. Cade believes he knows who's behind the madness.
Throughout the story, we are given peeks into Cade's past, his history with the US government and Griff. Zach is Griff's replacement. He's dying from disease and his last job is to train Zach, praying that the two get along enough to get the job done because there's no quitting, you're in this job until you die or get yourself killed.
Cade is bound by his blood oath to protect.
Although he agrees that he's now doing good, he no longer sees himself as a person, but a vampire and a murderer, damned for what he's become. I am anxious to read the next book in this exciting new series. Website for the series: Zach says, "I thought vampires were all sex gods with the ladies. Do you want to have sex with a cow? Reyes looks at Helen the person who handed out these "weapons". Helen asks him, "Question?
You want us to go up against that thing with a squirt gun and a sharp stick? Cade preps the chopper "Cade, he's getting up.

Says the super proud wife of a US Marine! Feb 05, Clare rated it it was amazing. Thought I would try this because I rather like a good Vampire story as long as it's not too vapid and well, nobody I also am a fan of Robert Ludlum's books, and this rather reminded me of them in some spots with the action sequences. I have a medical background so I guess that's why I like to have things explained to me logically--almost like I'd be making a diagnosis. I really enjoyed the "reports" and "data" that was offered in each chapter regarding the "subject", Nathaniel Cain.
I do wish we got to know him better, but that only made me want the next book more to be honest. I guess that's part of the old maxim of always leave'em wanting more. The story of the President binding the Vampire to him through Voodoo was very affecting once they got to the point where Nathaniel tells it. I've always been an X-files fan so, why not have a Vampire who works for the President seeking out that sort of thing?
A very good use for one if you can find one. The relationships between the FBI handler and Cain was really handled well. Actually the characters were all very realistic. I enjoyed the smart alec, politically savvy young whipper snapper who is suddenly saddled with being Cain's handler. He was a wonderful contrast to the previous handler. And I just started to type spoilers so I'll wrap it up. This is a really well written book that I enjoyed greatly. Then, I read it out loud to my daughter and she also enjoyed it.

She's 9 so there was some mild censorship as I read. Thank goodness she wasn't as aware as I was of how close to the headlines the book felt at times with our history of terrorist attacks--which made the threat in the book seem only more real. Once I started reading this book, I did not want to put it down - it is fabulous! It could be described as sort of a vampire meets James Bond meets Charles Stross' Laundry On Her Majesty's Occult Service , but with a few twists all of its own - such as the fact that the author uses actual events from the history of the US as a base for the book!

Then, to his surprise and chagrin, he finds himself relegated to a top secret position as the partner to the president's secret weapon - a vampire named Nathaniel Cade, who was pardoned from a death sentence years ago contingent on taking a blood oath to protect the President then Andrew Jackson and those under the President's orders. Cade and Burrows are there to tackle the sorts of problems that most people don't even know exist - and probably wouldn't believe exist if they were to find out.
Keeping in mind that what I was reading was a bound galley, I also have to comment that this is the cleanest text I have seen since I can't remember when. I didn't notice any typos, grammatical issues or continuity errors that's not to say there weren't any, just that they weren't obvious enough to catch my eye , and this on only the galley - I'm impressed. That said - this is the first book in a promised series, and I for one can NOT wait to see where it goes.
I'm hooked already - write fast, Mr. Farnsworth - write like the wind. You have one die-hard fan here already! Jun 01, Beau Smith rated it it was amazing. For years Cade, a vampire, has been protecting our Presidents and our country. Think of Jack Bauer, only as a vampire and more. The story and the characters are filled with layers and twists.

Not the usual story twists just to shock and be a twist, I'm talking about smart turns and dialogue that will make you re-read this book over and over. Author Christopher Farnsworth has been unleashed on the fiction world and I look forward to his rampage. As the saying goes, "Once you start this book, you can't put it down", well it's the truth.
Each chapter is headlined with information from the classified "instruction Manual" for Cade. Those bits alone are amazing. The best part is that Cade is not your run of the mill vampire with all the goth angst and sissy stuff vampire fiction has beat us over the head with for years. This is truly a testosterone filled ride that leaves you scrambling to get to the next chapter. I want this book to be a movie very badly.
It would be huge. They don't need to vary from what Farnsworth has written, he has done all the heavy lifting for the studios. Go, buy it today and thank me when you finish it. Nov 17, Gina rated it liked it Shelves: I feel like there are two types of readers. I would announce, "Hey everyone! There's this book about a year old vampire who is blood bound to serve the President of the United States against all supernatural enemies foreign and domestic.
Want to read it? The other type would roll their eyes at the camp. Honestly, after reading it, I'm not sure which side I would fall into. This book is to vampire novels what Sharknado I feel like there are two types of readers. This book is to vampire novels what Sharknado is to Jaws. It's awful and awesome in equal measure. I kind of loved it while also shaking my head in disbelief at all the world building issues. I'm almost at a loss what to say about it. Farnsworth takes a bunch of campy, cliched characters and writes them into some very good action sequences while glossing over some much needed investigation, world building, and dialog.
I'm not sure if I'll read more in this series, but since I have watched all the Sharknado sequels, this chances are good for the other books too. I plan on running Curse of Strahd in the coming months, and want to read some cheesy genre fiction to get in the mood. This was dumb but fun as heck. Dec 27, Jonathan Wilson rated it really liked it.
