The cover design is gorgeous and I'm not just saying that because it features my patron saint, though I commend their taste. Though relatively small, it still covers about 90 saints, both famous and many lesser known ones. What I love best are all the vintage pictures from old holy cards most of which apparently came from someone's private collection in Belgium.

With the limited selection of holy cards available these days it's very refreshing to see so many "new" pictures. My only critique is that in the descriptions of the various saints, the authors mention the "worship" of the saints e. As a Catholic, I find this term completely inaccurate and misleading. Saints are not worshipped - we honor them and ask them to pray for us, but only God is worshipped.

Still, overall I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to reading and treasuring it for years to come. Ignore the 'worship' part and enjoy the rest! Bought for my granddaughter for Christmas. What a sweet book! Love the look and feel of it and the endearing pictures. She is 13 and has a holy heart and loves this. She started reading stories right away. Wish there were more holy books like this. Miss our missal that we carried to Mass. This is such a lovely little book. I bought it for my grandmother for Christmas, and I know she will love it.

It is about 6x4 in in dimension, making it a perfect little size for your hands, and the cover is a very soft padded material, making it feel really luxurious. This is a book you want to pick up and treasure. It makes you feel calm just holding it. The pages have a very bright gold leaf edging and the inside cover is very pretty pink rose color with various stained-glass window-esque portraits of various saints. Inside, the each page features the name of a saint, what he or she is the patron saint of, their feast day, and a one page history, including where it is not obvious, why they become the Patron Saint of a certain category like why Saint Martin is the Patron Saint of Winemakers, even though he's famous for walking away from a life in the military because he no longer supported war.

One the opposite page is a beautiful picture of the saint, chosen from various prayer books, missals, and prayer cards found from the late s and early s. My grandmother is very hard to shop for, but I know she will absolutely love this book. I am so happy with it. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The idea of short stories of the Saints brought me to purchase this book Kindle Edition. Well, the stories are very short, and just seem incomplete for me. I felt that most of the stories could have been written in a bullet statement format, not narrative.

The narratives on most of the saints did not flow well. Each Saint is listed as a type of Patron Saint, but the reasons a saint is chosen is lacking in many stories. I gave the book 3 stars, but I would not recommend it. There has to be a better book on saints out there. For me "little" was too little. One person found this helpful.

Perfect length of story for each Saint, but way to small print. But like the book says The book is beautiful on the outside and the pictures through the book are really special. My problem is the printing and it is in a gray instead of a black which would be more readable. Since I am a senior citizen, the printing is too light for me. It might be perfect for someone else. I am going to give it to my great niece to prepare for her Confirmation.

Jan 05, Grace rated it really liked it. I wish it had been more consistent on some things, like sometimes they said how they were usually portrayed but not always and sometimes they explained the iconography but not always. But very pretty and nicely put together. Sep 26, Barbara M rated it really liked it. On the right, is an image of the saint.

This book was perfect for what I was looking for - a brief overview of the saints. It was an interesting book to read whether or not you are religious.

The saints are depicted in art work all over the world. It's interesting to read about their history and why certain images are used to depict them. Reading it, added to my understanding of the imagery used in many pieces of art work I've seen. This is a physically beautiful book - the cover is padded, the pages are gold trimmed and there is a lovely ribbon bookmark built into the book. It would be a nice gift for someone. I recommend this book to anyone interested in a brief overview of each of the notable saints.

I would not recommend it to a reader looking for an in-depth review of any particular saint. It's a good overview though I read a little of this book each day while enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning. I found it was a very pleasant way to read the book. I also read "Little Book of Angels" by this author. I enjoyed it and learned a lot reading it. I've seen angels depicted in art work all over the world. It added to my understanding and appreciation of the images of angels I've see.

In fact, I purchased this book in the Metropolitan Museum of Art gift shop! Jun 24, Helen Kennedy rated it liked it. I think maybe it was a translation thing, but there seems to be come confusion between "worship" and "venerate. Simple and sweet little book. Maybe it is precisely because I'm Lutheran, and not Catholic, that saints and relics and all of that are so fascinating to me. Full review to come. But wouldn't that be k Simple and sweet little book.

But wouldn't that be kind of ironic in itself? Maybe it is precisely because I am Lutheran that saints and relics are all so fascinating to me. It is a short volume, containing brief - very brief in some cases, when there are not a lot of hard facts to begin with - summaries of the lives of each saint and how they came to be a saint in the first place. I truly know nothing about any of the saints, I don't even know if they are all included in this text, but what I did read was very engaging and made me want to know more about the lives of many of those I read about.

The unfortunate side effect is that since so many of these people lived before , finding out any more information than what is contained here is quite unlikely. The search is half the fun though, isn't it? Overall, this is a simple and sweet little volume that I breezed through quickly in terms of reading. The photos of the cards are equally as interesting, especially the details in how each saint is often depicted - usually with either an item relating to their works, or the way in which they died or were martyred.

I only had a copy on my Kindle, so I'd like to have seen a hard copy to have a better look at the plates themselves larger and in color. Jul 08, Becky rated it liked it. Saints fascinate me - Some may say, you should go to the source, but I've thought - why not use a specialist if it makes sense.
