A book with obvious wear.

It is shorter than many European novels, but leads the reader into new ways of seeing the landscape around them. The poetry is wonderful. But then Basho is the master of Haiku. Basho recounts his journey through Japan with his companion Sora. The tale is told in prose form with haiku interspersed throughout Narrow Road to the Interior Oku no Hosomichi is his masterpiece. Ostensibly a chronological account of the poet's five-month journey in into the deep country north and west of the old capital, Edo, the work is in fact artful and Matsuo Basho is considered Japan's greatest haiku poet.
