The question of the call to an exclusive donation of self to God in virginity and in celibacy thrusts its roots deep in the Gospel soil of the theology of the body. To indicate the dimensions proper to it, one must bear in mind Christ's words about the beginning, and also what he said about the resurrection of the body. Consequently, to reply to the disciples' question, or rather, to clarify the problem placed by them, Christ recurred to another principle. Those who in life choose continence for the kingdom of heaven do so, not because it is inexpedient to marry or because of a supposed negative value of marriage, but in view of the particular value connected with this choice and which must be discovered and welcomed personally as one's own vocation.

There were only a couple pages on this subject toward the very end and they provided no information of which I was not already aware. The book's real subject is Roston's accusation that gay people are personally motivated only by sex and that they tend to be a bunch of tormented, drug-addled atheist witches. At least, I think that was the main argument. It was hard to tell.

I disagree with the ideology behind this book but that is not the main reason why I give it a low rating. Rather, it is because I found the text conceptually muddled to an extreme degree. It opens with embarrassing confessional tales that recur sporadically throughout the argument, padding the text where actual research is wanting. Most basic terms are not explicitly defined, and for those few that are, the author fails to adhere to his own definitions. What should be simple syllogisms are glaringly logically invalid.

Topics shift abruptly in a rambling manner, often within the same paragraph. He never makes clear who his intended audience is and what he wishes to persuade the audience to believe. Furthermore, even where the concepts are clear enough, the structure of nearly every sentence is flawed to the point of incomprehensibility.

Subjects and verbs do not agree, the wrong prepositions are used, singulars and plurals are mixed up, pronouns refer back to the wrong parts of the sentences. The conversational tone may suffice and even entertain when spoken from the pulpit with the appropriate inflection but the meaning disintegrates when consigned to formal writing.

On top of this, there are a lot of spelling errors of the sort that automatic spellcheck could not have caught. In one instance, the author says he distrusts the reliability of all research and statistics. It is therefore unsurprising that half of the time he relies purely on personal anecdote and prejudice. In other places, he does cite studies, but they tend to be twenty years old and of dubious relevance. One "source" is a self-published work whose author claims to channel the words of a nameless occult spirit.

Another "methodology" was his solitary review of YouTube videos made by people talking about relationships and seeking relationship advice, from which he concluded that many relationships don't last very long. No gay person was directly interviewed for the book, nor was any pro-gay theorist quoted except in epigraphs that he did not directly engage.

He claims to have some gay friends but says he does not know any in long-term relationships, based on which he is all too eager to conclude that same-sex sexual activity does not lend itself to true love. Roston doesn't seem to appreciate the difference between a man who is gay, a man who has sex with men but does not identify as gay, and a transsexual person. Bisexuality is totally lost on him and isn't considered in the book. He also doesn't acknowledge that, although some gay people treat their sexual identity as a significant part of their entire character and interests, others do not -- and that this can change over time.

He believes that gay people can find alternative happiness in heterosexual marriages or celibacy, but he doesn't explain how this deep psychic switch can be achieved, except to say that they should focus on loving Jesus and to assert rather smugly that he personally loves his male friends while managing not to have sex with them.

I cannot imagine who would be informed by this book. Great insights and perspectives! Never thought about same sex attraction as being universal before Truth to the spiritual warfare we all face. A realistic approach to same sex sexual issues in the church! The writer used his own experiences to debunk or confirm certain arguments.

I really liked how in-depth this writer went into the research and scripture text that he used to discuss this topic. He really managed to present a balanced dialogue, I felt like I was talking to someone as I was reading this book. My favorite chapters was the last 3, very insightful and inspirational chapters.

This is not balanced; it is CR anti-gay propaganda, pure and simple.
