I take exception to the previous three reviews because they unfairly judge the story as a serious work of historical fiction, which it definitely is not. If the book had been written 50 or 60 years earlier, it would have been classified as "men's adventure. The Victorian Navy, which certainly had more than its share of pompous characters, is simply a backdrop through which McCutchan unfolds his Halfhyde stories.
As a character, Halfhyde is percent tongue-in-cheek, and I can't believe for one minute that the author intended him otherwise. As the story develops, Halfhyde manages to incite a rebellion, capture a fort, escape the gallows, and disable most of the Russian fleet through a combination of surprise, deceit, and sheer audacity.
Halfhyde at the Bight of Benin
Of course it was, but I found the story to be enormously entertaining from the first page to the very end. If you're a serious student of the Victorian Navy, don't read this; but if you simply want to have a fun romp through it, give Halfhyde a try. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Halfhyde has nothing to lose, so he'd willing to take risks. Nice historical setting, as naval power is changing.
The story is more about the conflicts with Halfhyde and the command structure, i. That theme overrides the story line. The rest of the story line is background about previous events. Even after re-reading the book I can't really say what happened, just that the story ended.
Halfhyde at the Bight of Benin
Bight of Benin Well written naval book full of adventure and espionage. Vincent Halfhyde is the leading character with plenty of swagger befitting his swashbuckling tasks. The setting off the west coast of Africa makes for an exotic and wild image. On to the next book in the Halfhyde Adventures. OK, it was a tad far fetched in a few places but overall it was intertaining. It kept my interest and I liked that the author seemed to know his way around that time period.
I have read other books by the same author and found them enjoyable as well.
See a Problem?
This was my first Halfhyde and I look forward to trying the next in the series. If you want symbolism and characters who wrestle with existential meaning don't buy the book. In fact go elsewhere in Amazon. However if you want a really well written yarn, buy this book and everything else in the series.
Halfhyde Adventure Series
So far this series has the promise of filling that need. I am looking forward to the next book and will give another review then. McCutchan is not the writter that many others are. The stories are not closly related to reality. They must not be well researched. One person found this helpful. See all 10 reviews.
