If you were, like I was, a lazy student of American history in high school, the entire 19th century probably reduces to one handy image. And if you are, as I now am, much more intrigued by history and the hidden stories of how lives were lived by people caught up in the capitalized moments in history books, you find the 19th century irreducibly rich. In a blend of foot-soldier tale and multicultural romance, he illustrates how brutal life was for those young men recruited in the s to expand the nation into the Southwest and on to the Pacific.
As so many soldiers throughout history have done, the protagonist questions the expansion and his role in it. In this, Hague gives a much more thorough and nuanced portrait than the lip service given to such second thoughts in traditional "westerns" a term I hesitate to apply to this book, though it lands squarely in the right century for it to be labeled such. Also like so many soldiers throughout history, the protagonist falls in love with a woman and a culture entirely unlike his own.
The book's most striking images, however, don't involve the soldiers at all but, rather, their animals. By not omitting or glossing over their plight, Hague reminds us that for millennia, horses and mules and beasts of burden have been equal victims in man's quest to conquer. Don't give me a story about the people giving orders — tell me about the lives at the other end of the command chain. I see that this novel has been suggested as a Romance, and it is, but it is many more things than that.http://stroika-krd.ru/scripts/64.php

Mi Casa Bonita, Inc
The initial inclusion of dialogues in Spanish sent me warning signs; though, I finally decided -- maybe wrongly -- that the Mexican population in New Mexico was already speaking Spanish with a U. The book had an almost flawless edition, which added to the pleasure of reading. Sep 07, Jess rated it really liked it Shelves: Hague captures his knowledge of this time period in this novel.

I enjoyed how he utilized John Henry Harris, the protagonist, to show how soldiers from the East Coast were excited for adventure as they headed west to California. There is some romance in this story and some action as well, but the main idea of this story is how one's outlook can change when you meet the people you are expecting to fight and learn how similar they are to you. There is also some Spanish in the novel that allows Dr.
There is also some Spanish in the novel that allows one to experience the language barrier that can occur in a foreign country. I have studied Spanish for many years, so it was funny to know what they were actually saying. Towards the end of novel there was one confusing part, where I wasn't sure if John was in Santa Fe or in California.
However, the end is fitting, since it is open-ended. The readers are left to decide what will happen to John. Hague is a brilliant writer who allows readers to learn, while also enjoying the story. Oct 01, Wendy rated it really liked it Recommended to Wendy by:
