I know that this is supposed to be a review of the book rather than the person it is about, but it is hard to separate the two.

The book really grabbed me and since it isn't a long book I ended up reading it in one sitting in just one afternoon. It is written in a casual and conversational tone. He holds nothing back. He's very open and honest and lets it all hang out. He expresses remorse, regret, and shame. As the story gets deeper into his destructive behavior, I felt rather like I looking at a severe, bloody road accident. I went from just reading a memoir to indulging in a morbid fascination for his spectacular crashes.

Though he claims to have deserved all of his punishments, he implies some contradictions when he complains that some of his incarcerations were more draconian than his crime deserved. After all, he didn't murder anybody or molest children; he doesn't think he's as guilty as the guys who committed those crimes. He's not a "real" criminal, he's just "sick. I'm sorry, but if you have the FBI looking for you and you're running and hiding away from them, you probably fall into the category of a criminal. He is quite proud of the fact that he never bet on nor did he "fix" a game in which he played.

He considers that to be the lowest of the low to which even he would never stoop. I think that particular point of view is really part of his moral blindness. His priorities are mixed up, and I still don't think he gets that, even after all this time.

His lying, stealing, cheating and scamming innocent people out of their money, not to mention betraying the trust of family and friends, is far worse than fixing a ball game for money. I did, however, rather get tired of the illness excuse. Yes, I understand that compulsive gambling is rightfully compared equally to drug and alcohol addiction or compulsive eating or hoarding.
