The aim of this research is to develop medications that target and interfere with the hormones that are known to increase sebum production e. The use of antimicrobial peptides against P. The authors proposed applying this research toward development of bacteriophage therapy as an acne treatment in order to overcome the problems associated with long-term antibiotic therapy such as bacterial resistance. Decreased levels of retinoic acid in the skin may contribute to comedo formation. To address this deficiency, methods to increase the skin's production of retinoid acid are being explored.

This article explores the question of how children's literature reflects national identity in a diverse society. Drawing parallels with Ellison's "Invisible Man," it speculates on how literary omissions and misrepresentations of diverse groups may influence the minds of young readers in their attitudes toward themselves, their nation ,…. Increasing civil society participation in the national HIV response: The biennial UNGASS reporting process is an opportunity for civil society to engage in a review of the implementation of commitments. The utility of UNGASS reporting seemed to be better understood by both government and civil society , compared with previous reporting rounds.

Civil society participation was strongest when civil society groupings took the initiative and organized themselves. An important barrier was their lack of experience with national level processes. Civil society involvement in national HIV planning and strategic processes was perceived to be good, but better access to funding and technical support is needed. Instances remain where there are fundamental differences between government and civil society perceptions of the HIV policy and program environment. How or whether differences were resolved is not always clear, but both government and civil society seemed to appreciate the opportunity for discussion.

Collaborative reporting by government and civil society on UNGASS indicators is a small but potentially valuable step in what should be an ongoing and fully institutionalized process of collaborative planning, implementation, monitoring, assessment and correction of HIV responses. The momentum achieved through the UNGASS process should be maintained with follow-up actions to address data gaps, formalize partnerships and enhance active and meaningful engagement.

Between Nationalism and Internationalism: Under Fischer the Society promoted international collaboration with foreign societies , and in it opened an impressive headquarters, the Hofmann House, where it centralized its greatly expanded literary activity including abstracts and reference publications. Yet a half-century later, after war and racial- national extremism, the house lay in ruins and the Society had ceased to exist.

In remembering the Society , one may well ask why its auspicious beginning should have led to this ignominious end. National Cancer Societies and their public statements on alcohol consumption and cancer risk. Studies have shown that alcohol consumption is a risk factor for oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal, esophageal, liver, colon, rectal and breast cancer. It would therefore be expected that cancer prevention organizations would incorporate these facts into their public stance on the consumption of alcohol.

The aims of this study were to: English-speaking countries belonging to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD ] communicate alcohol-related cancer risk to the public and 2 compare whether these organization's advocacy of increased alcohol taxes is in line with their advocacy of tobacco tax increases to reduce cancer risk. We searched the websites of the following national cancer organizations for all statements related to the relationship between alcohol consumption and cancer risk: A categorical system was developed to code the qualitative data for health statements, alcohol consumption recommendations, and tax policy recommendations.

Websites were analyzed in March of All organizations, with the exception of the American Cancer Society and Canadian Cancer Society , state that alcohol is a group 1 carcinogen and that even low-level alcohol consumption increases risk for some cancers. Additionally, while the American Cancer Society supports increasing tobacco taxes through its cancer action network, it has not advocated for increased alcohol taxes in relation to support for tobacco tax increases.

Nations ' income inequality predicts ambivalence in stereotype content: Income inequality undermines societies: The more inequality, the more health problems, social tensions, and the lower social mobility, trust, life expectancy. Given people's tendency to legitimate existing social arrangements, the stereotype content model SCM argues that ambivalence-perceiving many groups as either warm or competent, but not both-may help maintain socio-economic disparities.

The association between stereotype ambivalence and income inequality in 37 cross- national samples from Europe, the Americas, Oceania, Asia, and Africa investigates how groups' overall warmth-competence, status-competence, and competition-warmth correlations vary across societies , and whether these variations associate with income inequality Gini index. More unequal societies report more ambivalent stereotypes, whereas more equal ones dislike competitive groups and do not necessarily respect them as competent. Unequal societies may need ambivalence for system stability: Income inequality compensates groups with partially positive social images.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology. Although described centuries ago, the pathophysiology of this disease is still poorly understood. Epidemiological studies indicate a genetic component, but a rosacea gene has not been identified yet. Four subtypes and several variants of rosacea have been described.

Innate immune mechanisms and dysregulation of the neurovascular system are involved in rosacea initiation and perpetuation, although the complex network of primary induction and secondary reaction of neuroimmune communication is still unclear. Later, rosacea may result in fibrotic facial changes, suggesting a strong connection between chronic inflammatory processes and skin fibrosis development.

This review highlights recent molecular gene array and cellular findings and aims to integrate the different body defense mechanisms into a modern concept of rosacea pathophysiology. Management of cutaneous rosacea: Over the past decade, both basic science and clinical research have provided new information on pathophysiology and therapy that has led to advances in the management of rosacea. As rosacea is a very common facial skin disorder in adults of both genders and essentially all races and ethnicities, these advances can provide therapeutic benefit to many affected individuals around the world.

This article provides a collective review of more recent information on the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of rosacea , and discusses individual medical therapies based on PubMed literature searches on ' rosacea ', ' rosacea therapies' and each therapy that are included in this article. The perspectives of the author on management of rosacea are also included. Newer therapies and treatment concepts received greater emphasis. Management of cutaneous rosacea involves patient education, integration of proper skin care, differentiation of visible manifestations and symptoms, selecting therapies that correlate with the manifestations that are to be treated, setting realistic patient expectations on anticipated degree and time course of response and designing an overall management plan that addresses needs of the individual patient.

In many cases, a combination approach is needed, and due to the chronicity of the disease long-term management is often warranted. Rosacea is like no other disease a problem for patients regarding the use of skin care and cleaning products. The subjective assessment of the severity of the illness is an important factor regarding the development of depression in these patients.

Inadequate skin care and cleaning products can lead to irritation and stinging of the skin. Dermatologists should address questions regarding skin care, cleaning and sun screens. Because of the higher irritability of the skin of rosacea patients, all possibly irritating cleaning products or procedures should be avoided. The water temperature is also important; it should be lukewarm to avoid the provocation of a vascular reaction. Soaps should be avoided, because they are alkaline and thus lead to a higher pH of the skin.

A higher pH of the skin can lead to irritation. Appropriate make-up causes no aggravation of the skin and increases patient's satisfaction with their skin and thus leads to a higher compliance with pharmacological therapy. Laser or intense pulsed light treatment can improve telangiectasia or erythema. Operative treatment of rhinophyma is effective and well-established. Azelaic acid is a saturated dicarboxylic acid, which is naturally occurring and has been used in the treatment of rosacea , acne, and melasma.

Genomics of pear and other Rosaceae fruit trees. The family Rosaceae includes many economically important fruit trees, such as pear, apple, peach, cherry, quince, apricot, plum, raspberry, and loquat. Over the past few years, whole-genome sequences have been released for Chinese pear, European pear, apple, peach, Japanese apricot, and strawberry.

These sequences help us to conduct functional and comparative genomics studies and to develop new cultivars with desirable traits by marker-assisted selection in breeding programs. These genomics resources also allow identification of evolutionary relationships in Rosaceae , development of genome-wide SNP and SSR markers, and construction of reference genetic linkage maps, which are available through the Genome Database for the Rosaceae website.

Here, we review the recent advances in genomics studies and their practical applications for Rosaceae fruit trees, particularly pear, apple, peach, and cherry. Fruits are the defining feature of angiosperms, likely have contributed to angiosperm successes by protecting and dispersing seeds, and provide foods to humans and other animals, with many morphological types and important ecological and agricultural implications. To address Rosaceae fruit evolution and other questions, we generated new transcriptomic and genomic datasets and identified hundreds of nuclear genes to reconstruct a well-resolved Rosaceae phylogeny with highly supported monophyly of all subfamilies and tribes.

Phylogenomic analysis yielded strong evidence for numerous whole genome duplications WGDs , supporting the hypothesis that the apple tribe had a WGD and revealing another one shared by fleshy fruit-bearing members of this tribe, with moderate support for WGDs in the peach tribe and other groups. Ancestral character reconstruction for fruit types supports independent origins of fleshy fruits from dry-fruit ancestors, including the evolution of drupes e.

We propose that WGDs and environmental factors, including animals, contributed to the evolution of the many fruits in Rosaceae , which provide a foundation for understanding fruit evolution. There are numerous proposed but contested components involved in the pathophysiology of rosacea , including inflammatory mediators, reactive oxygen species ROS released by neutrophils, and microbial components. Ideal comprehensive rosacea management should address these components. In a roundtable discussion, information leaders discussed the pathophysiology of rosacea and other issues of importance to successful rosacea management, such as skin care regimens, quality of life QOL , and compliance.

In contrasting these different environments, this article offers the first comparison of the policy response to AIDS in the BRICS nations and seeks to understand the way in which political context matters for conditioning the response to a major epidemic. Using a comparative historical approach, we find that while collaborative state-civil society relations have produced an aggressive response and successful outcomes in Brazil, democratic openness and state-civil society engagement has not necessarily correlated with an aggressive response or better outcomes in the other cases.

Response to the epidemic has been worst by far in democratic South Africa, followed by Russia, where in the former, denialism and antagonistic state-civil society relations fuelled a delayed response and proved extremely costly in terms of human lives. In Russia, a lack of civil societal opportunity for mobilization and non-governmental organization NGO growth, political centralization and the state's unwillingness to work with NGOs led to an ineffective government response.

Top-down bureaucratic rule and a reluctance to fully engage civil society in democratic India substantially delayed the state's efforts to engage in a successful partnership with NGOs. Nevertheless, China has done surprisingly well, in spite of its repressive approach and narrow engagement with civil society.

And in all cases, we find the relationship between state and civil society to be evolving over time in important ways. These findings suggest the need for more research on the links between democratic openness, political repression and policy responses to epidemics. Published by Oxford University Press in. Findings From a Web-based Survey. The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of rosacea on self-perception, emotional, social, and overall well-being and quality of life in individuals with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea ETR and papulopustular rosacea PPR. We distributed a cross-sectional email invitation for participants in the United States to fill out a web-based survey.

We included adults who reported having previously received a diagnosis of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea or papulopustular rosacea. Six hundred participants enrolled and completed the survey, with most rating their rosacea as mild or moderate ETR: Rosacea -Specific Quality-of-Life total and domain scores indicated negative impact of rosacea for both cohorts.

Both cohorts reported worse item Short Form Health Survey overall and domain scores than population norms in the United States. Rosacea had wide-ranging, negative effects on self-perceptions and emotional, social, and overall well-being as well as rosacea -specific quality of life. Overall, both erythematotelangiectatic rosacea and papulopustular. The Anatomische Gesellschaft and National Socialism - A preliminary analysis based on the society proceedings.

The Anatomische Gesellschaft AG is an international society for the anatomical sciences and at the same time the main organising body for German anatomists. This study analyses how the AG went through the years of National Socialism. As the society does not possess archival material from that time, the analysis is mainly based on the society proceedings Verhandlungen der Anatomischen Gesellschaft published annually after each meeting from to and again in During the period of National Socialism, the AG kept its international status against demands to make it a purely German society.

The membership directories reveal that it was at least possible for members whose career was disrupted by Nazi policies to remain on the membership lists throughout the Nazi period. However, in contrast to later assumptions that no persecuted member of the AG was ever struck from its register, 17 of 57 persecuted members left the society between and The membership of six of these members was cancelled, officially for unpaid fees.

However, other members with much longer arrears were not cancelled. To date, no additional historical information is available to assess the circumstances of these cancellations. In general, it remains remarkable that, in contrast to many other societies , the AG did not follow the path of preemptive obedience towards the new rulers. More archival sources need to be uncovered to elucidate the external influences and internal negotiations behind the published documents. Published by Elsevier GmbH. Culture and National Well-Being: Should Societies Emphasize Freedom or Constraint? Throughout history and within numerous disciplines, there exists a perennial debate about how societies should best be organized.

Should they emphasize individual freedom and autonomy or security and constraint? Contrary to proponents who tout the benefits of one over the other, we demonstrate across 32 nations that both freedom and constraint exhibit a curvilinear relationship with many indicators of societal well-being. Relative to moderate nations , very permissive and very constrained nations exhibit worse psychosocial outcomes lower happiness, greater dysthymia, higher suicide rates , worse health outcomes lower life expectancy, greater mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and diabetes and poorer economic and political outcomes lower gross domestic product per capita, greater risk for political instability.

This supports the notion that a balance between freedom and constraint results in the best national outcomes. Accordingly, it is time to shift the debate away from either constraint or freedom and focus on both in moderation. The National Mechatronic Platform. The basis of the educational programs in the knowledge society. The shift from the information society to the knowledge based society caused by the mechatronic revolution, that took place in the 9th decade of the last century, launched a lot of challenges for education and researches activities too.

Knowledge production development asks for new educational technologies to stimulate the initiative and creativity as a base to increase the productivity in the knowledge production. The paper presents details related on the innovative potential of mechatronics as educational environment for transdisciplinarity learning and integral education.

The basic infrastructure of that environment is based on mechatronic platforms. In order to develop the knowledge production at the national level the specific structures are to be developed. The paper presents details related on the structure of the National Mechatronic Platform as a true knowledge factory. The benefits of the effort to develop the specific infrastructure for knowledge production in the field of mechatronics are outlined too.

The role of obstetrics and gynecology national societies during natural disasters. When a natural disaster occurs, such as an earthquake, floods, or a tsunami, the international response is quick. Too often, local specialists are ignored and are not involved in the response. The massive earthquake in Haiti in exemplifies the lack of coordinated response involving national organizations following the disaster. An active strategy is proposed. Published by Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Dermasence refining gel modulates pathogenetic factors of rosacea in vitro. Over the counter cosmetics sold for local treatment of slight to moderate rosacea often state the claim of actively modulating rosacea pathogenesis.

Factors involved in the pathogenesis of this common yet complex skin disorder include kallikrein-related peptidase 5 KLK5 , LL, as well as protease-activated receptor 2 PAR2 and vascular endothelial growth factor VEGF. The objective was to prove the modulating effect of the cosmetic skin care agent Dermasence Refining Gel DRG on factors involved in rosacea pathogenesis. The adjunctive use of DRG in mild to moderate rosacea as a topical cosmetic seems medically reasonable. The cost-effectiveness of rosacea treatments. However, costs and efficacies of these therapies vary widely.

To determine relative cost-effectiveness of common therapeutic regimens using published data. Average daily costs ADC were determined based on treatment frequency and estimated gram usage for facial application of topical regimens of metronidazole 0. The ADC was compared with published efficacy rates from clinical trials, with efforts to standardize outcome measures. Based on these efficacy rates, costs per success were calculated and combined with office visit costs to estimate the total cost for each treatment for a week period.

Medical countermeasures for national security: How do governments contribute to the pharmaceuticalization of society? Whilst the pivotal role of industry is extensively documented, this article shows that governments too are accelerating, intensifying and opening up new trajectories of pharmaceuticalization in society. Governments are becoming more deeply invested in pharmaceuticals because their national security strategies now aspire to defend populations against health-based threats like bioterrorism and pandemics.

To counter those threats, governments are acquiring and stockpiling a panoply of 'medical countermeasures' such as antivirals, next-generation vaccines, antibiotics and anti-toxins. More than that, governments are actively incentivizing the development of many new medical countermeasures--principally by marshaling the state's unique powers to introduce exceptional measures in the name of protecting national security. At least five extraordinary policy interventions have been introduced by governments with the aim of stimulating the commercial development of novel medical countermeasures: Those combined efforts, the article argues, are spawning a new, government-led and quite exceptional medical countermeasure regime operating beyond the conventional boundaries of pharmaceutical development and regulation.

In the first comprehensive analysis of the pharmaceuticalization dynamics at play in national security policy, this article unearths the detailed array of policy interventions through which governments too are becoming more deeply imbricated in the pharmaceuticalization of. Hypothyroidism in Patients with Psoriasis or Rosacea: A Large Population Study. Hypothyroidism is a common disease, and there may be a link between hypothyroidism and inflammatory skin disease. The purpose of this study is to assess whether hypothyroidism is more prevalent in psoriasis or rosacea patients.

We utilized a large claims-based database to analyze rates of hypothyroidism in patients with psoriasis and rosacea compared to other patients with skin diseases. Participants were patients between years of age with ICD-9 diagnosis codes for psoriasis, rosacea , and hypothyroidism. We found that rates of hypothyroidism in rosacea and psoriasis patients were similar to rates of hypothyroidism in those without rosacea or psoriasis.

Systemic therapy of ocular and cutaneous rosacea in children. In paediatric rosacea , ocular symptoms are often predominant. Literature about systemic therapy of paediatric ocular rosacea is sparse, though. Analysis of children with ocular rosacea treated systemically, particularly addressing remission and recurrence rates.

Retrospective study reviewing the medical records of children with ocular rosacea treated with systemic antibiotic therapy. Nine of 19 patients were chosen for detailed analysis. Seven of nine patients treated with erythromycin, one of eight patients treated with doxycycline and the patient treated with minocycline achieved a complete remission of ocular and cutaneous symptoms.

Two of nine patients treated with erythromycin, seven of eight patients treated with doxycycline and the patient treated with roxithromycin achieved a partial remission. Relapses occurred in the patient treated with minocycline cutaneous , two of eight patients treated with doxycycline ocular and cutaneous and one of nine patients treated with erythromycin cutaneous.

To achieve a complete remission of cutaneous and ocular rosacea , a long-term anti-inflammatory treatment of at least 6 months is necessary. The relapse rates seem to be lower than in adults especially in the patients treated with erythromycin. A new definition of Genetic Counseling: Genetic counseling is the process of helping people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease.

This process integrates the following: Interpretation of family and medical histories to assess the chance of disease occurrence or recurrence. Education about inheritance, testing, management, prevention, resources and research. Counseling to promote informed choices and adaptation to the risk or condition. The definition was approved after a peer review process with input from the NSGC membership, genetic professional organizations, the NSGC legal counsel, and leaders of several national genetic advocacy groups.

Polyprenols in leaves of fruit-trees of Rosaceae family. In leaves of various species of fruit-trees belonging to the Rosaceae family, large amounts of polyprenyl acetates 0.

About the author

Discrete constant differences of polyprenol spectrum characteristic of each genus studied: Malus, Prunus and Pyrus were observed. In each species poly-cis-prenols composed of 19 and 20 isoprene units were predominating. In one of the 23 studied species Prunus incisa a fraction of long-chain polyprenols composed of isoprene units was also present. It seems that this type of unusually long-chain polyprenols could occur also in other plants of the Rosaceae family.

The role of the British major life assurance companies in administering the National Insurance Acts in the guise of approved societies has long been controversial. The companies have been accused of profiteering rather than civic duty or social altruism.

This article, using the Prudential Assurance Company as a case study, questions this argument. Life assurance companies such as the Prudential were fundamental to the operational running of national health insurance in the first half of the twentieth century due to their scale, scope and expertise. In addition, they were keen to extend the scope of national health insurance and campaigned to make the acts more comprehensive. Finally, while the companies certainly did see benefits in administering the acts, these were related more to corporate identity, branding and public relations than to direct pecuniary gain.

An analysis of the inclusion of the life insurance companies in the administration of the National Health Insurance Acts is thus as important for an understanding of twentieth-century Britain as it is for the development of modern social welfare. Is There a Conflict between Individual and Society? Human societies cannot exist without human beings and human beings cannot exist without a society. Good candidates may be transient receptor potential TRP ion channels of vanilloid type TRPV , which can be activated by many trigger factors of rosacea. Here, we analyzed the expression and distribution of TRPV receptors in the various subtypes of rosacea on non-neuronal cells using immunohistochemistry, morphometry, double immunoflourescence, and quantitative real-time PCR qRT-PCR as compared with healthy skin and lupus erythematosus.

TRP ion channels may be targets for the treatment of rosacea. The impact of gender and nationality on winning a professional society award. Women are under-represented for science awards and fellow status in professional science societies accounting for career stage and are over-represented for teaching and service awards Ball et al.

In addition, for the American Geophysical Union, non-U. Gender bias in evaluation processes are well-documented e. There are effective mechanisms to reduce bias in both nomination and evaluation processes, a few of which are: Professional societies can promote fairness and inclusion by self-study: Sixty-one years after the end of the Hitler dictatorship, the history of the German Ophthalmological Society DOG has still hardly been investigated.

According to different sources, especially the reports of the DOG congresses , , , and , the following picture can be drawn: After a change of the constitution the DOG came under the control of the "Reichsinnenministerium". However, it escaped the egalitarianism "Gleichschaltung" and remained relatively independent. Almost all of these joined the party in or later.

Up to the last congress in Dresden, , the DOG activities were quite extensive. After that time the activities strongly declined. Some prominent ophthalmologists and DOG members were at least in part responsible for the sterilisations because of "congenital blindness". However, as far as it is known, the DOG itself did not intervene directly concerning the practice of sterilisation. Many of these stemmed from foreign countries, and many were German Jews. However, a main reason for leaving the DOG was very likely the feeling of being unwanted.

The national socialism had several disastrous effects on ophthalmology. Chartered Society of Physiotherapy's identification of national research priorities for physiotherapy using a modified Delphi technique. To define research priorities to strategically inform the evidence base for physiotherapy practice. A modified Delphi method using SurveyMonkey software identified priorities for physiotherapy research through national consensus.

An iterative process of three rounds provided feedback. Round 1 requested five priorities using pre-defined prioritisation criteria. Content analysis identified research themes and topics. Round 2 requested rating of the importance of the research topics using a Likert scale. Round 3 requested a further process of rating.

Quantitative and qualitative data informed decision-making. Consensus across participants was evaluated using Kendall's W. Consensus between participants was good for most topics. Measurement validity of the research topics was good. The involvement of multiple stakeholders as participants ensured the current context of the intended use of the priorities. From a process of national consensus involving key stakeholders, including service users, physiotherapy research topics have been identified and prioritised. Setting priorities provides a vision of how research can contribute to the developing research base in physiotherapy to maximise focus.

Published by Elsevier Ltd. Current drug therapies for rosacea: Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder that presents with abnormal vascular and inflammatory conditions. Clinical manifestations include flushing, facial erythema, inflammatory papules and pustules, telangiectasias, edema, and watery or irritated eyes. To discuss the evolving pathophysiology of rosacea , factors involved in promoting the chronic vascular and inflammatory abnormalities seen in rosacea , and the available drug therapies for the condition.

Chronic inflammation and vascular changes are believed to be underlying factors in the pathophysiology of rosacea. Aberrant cathelicidin expression, elevated kallikrein 5 KLK5 proteolytic activity, and altered toll-like receptor 2 TLR2 expression have been reported in rosacea skin leading to the production of proinflammatory cytokines. Until recently, drug therapies only targeted the inflammatory lesions papules and pustules and transient erythema associated with these inflammatory lesions of rosacea. Brimonidine tartrate gel 0.

Rosacea is a chronic vascular and inflammatory skin disease. Understanding the role of factors that trigger the onset of rosacea symptoms and exacerbate the condition is crucial in treating this skin disease. Current Educational Topics No. Abstracts of Papers Presented at St. This bulletin presents abstracts of papers presented at St. The first meeting of African American physicists was held in at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, with around 50 Black physicists in attendance.

During the ensuing years the Conference began to grow and was hosted by different institutions at various geographic locations. This Conference brought together over African American physics students and working physicists. Also attending were corporate and graduate school recruiters, administrators, professional society representatives and others concerned with the small representation of minorities in the field of physics.

The organizers of the Conference contracted with the Statistical Research Center of the American Institute of Physics to conduct a formal evaluative study of the meeting, resulting in this report. The evaluation questionnaire was designed by the organizers of the NSBP conference with input from the Statistical Research Center's staff.

It included questions on the students' backgrounds and demographic characteristics, physics research experience, career goals, challenges faced in their academic pursuits, and ratings of various aspects of the conference. The questionnaire was distributed at the conference when the students signed in. Of the students who were registered, roughly attended and were given the four-page questionnaire to complete. This low response rate could be attributed in part to the fact that respondents were asked to provide possibly sensitive personal.

Twitter expands the reach and engagement of a national scientific meeting: Social media is the interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and web-based networks. The aim of this study was to highlight the use of Twitter at an annual national meeting held in The Symplur healthcare analytics website was used to prospectively examine traffic related to the ISU Annual Meeting. Phlebotomy is one of the most complex medical procedures in the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients in healthcare. In order to minimize the possibility of errors, phlebotomy procedures should be standardised, well-documented and written instructions should be available at every workstation.

However, the growing body of evidence in importance of preanalytical phase management resulted in a need for evidence based revision and expansion of existing recommendations. In response to reports of increasing financial and administrative burdens on oncology practices and a lack of systematic information related to these issues, American Society of Clinical Oncology ASCO leadership started an effort to collect key practice-level data from all oncology practices in the United States. The initial Census work involved compiling an inventory of oncology practices from existing lists of oncology physicians in the United States.

A comprehensive, online data collection instrument was developed, which covered a number of areas, including practice characteristics staffing configuration, organizational structure, patient mix and volume, types of services offered ; organizational, staffing, and service changes over the past 12 months; and an assessment of the likelihood that the practice would experience organizational, staffing, and service changes in the next 12 months.

More than practices participated in the Census by providing information. In this article, we present preliminary highlights from the data gathered to date. We found that practice size was related to having experienced practice mergers, hiring additional staff, and increasing staff pay in the past 12 months, that geographic location was related to having experienced hiring additional staff, and that practices in metropolitan areas were more likely to have experienced practice mergers in the past 12 months than those in nonmetropolitan areas.

We also found that practice size and geographic location were related to higher likelihoods of anticipating practice mergers, sales, and purchases in the future. Prenatal Testing for Adult-Onset Conditions: Advances in genetic testing and the availability of such testing in pregnancy allows prospective parents to test their future child for adult-onset conditions. This ability raises several complex ethical issues. Prospective parents have reproductive rights to obtain information about their fetus. This information may or may not alter pregnancy management. These rights can be in conflict with the rights of the future individual, who will be denied the right to elect or decline testing.

This paper highlights the complexity of these issues, details discussions that went into the National Society of Genetic Counselors NSGC Public Policy Task Force's development of the Prenatal testing for Adult-Onset Conditions position statement adopted in November , and cites relevant literature on this topic through December Issues addressed include parental rights and autonomy, rights of the future child, the right not to know, possible adverse effects on childhood and the need for genetic counseling.

This paper will serve as a reference to genetic counselors and healthcare professionals when faced with this situation in clinical practice. Severe exacerbation of rosacea induced by cinnamon supplements. The authors report a case of a year-old Caucasian female with type 2 diabetes mellitus who experienced an acute exacerbation of her rosacea 2 weeks after self-initiating cinnamon oil pills to lower her blood sugar levels. Historically, cinnamon oil has been used for a variety of medicinal purposes, but recently the use of cinnamon oil in lowering blood glucose and cholesterol levels in patients with type 2 diabetes is being investigated and gaining popularity amongst the general population.

The use of cinnamon has commonly produced cutaneous side effects of irritant or allergic contact dermatitis and been reported to have vasodilatory effects. Yet, there are no reports of cinnamon use triggering a rosacea exacerbation in the literature. Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring, straight-chain dicarboxylic acid which is effective in the treatment of rosacea , presumably on account of its anti-inflammatory properties. However, neither active treatment had a clinically discernable effect on telangiectasia.
