It went way beyond my expectations. Very well-researched, a must read. I felt like I lived the story Even if you aren't too interested in Manson, this book is a crucial look into aspects of America's past: I would've gotten much more out of this book for the time periods involved, than many US history books I had to read.

Would be helpful also in criminology, sociology, pysch. I am giving this Manson book by I read Helter Skelter decades ago and it is a great book. I could not help but think about how Leslie or Pat could have been replaced by Squeaky or Gypsy on those drug-addled death runs to Cielo Driven and to the LaBianca's. Yes they were guilty but the book effectively left me with a deep sadness for all these people who's drug use, misplaced search for a leader, and perhaps their sketchy biological family ties led them to being sucked into that national nightmare.

When it comes to the infamous "Helter Skelter" summer of in Los Angeles, its still hard to beat Vincent Bugliosi's account. That said, Jeff Guinn has done an excellent job of expanding on Bugliosi's version of events, while also placing Charles Manson and the murders he orchestrated in their historical context. Reading Guinn's version of events, you are introduced to the California of , and gain a better understanding of how and why this otherwise diminutive career hoodlum was able to manipulate so many of his followers. The new biography about Charles Manson brought the '60's back to me.

It was a nasty decade full of violence, hatred, war.

There was the "summer of love" with Woodstock but that was far overshadowed by the bad. The Black Panthers were organized as well as the Weather Underground.

Both ready to commit violence in the name of their beliefs. And rising from this national angst was Charles Manson. The author of the new bio, Jeff Guinn, says of his writings that "he wants to write about an era in American history, and to get readers interested I usually pick an iconic event. History doesn't happen in a vacuum.

Charlie, as he is known to his cult, "the family", manipulates them into committing 7 horrendous murders. It's Los Angeles Aug. Members of the family break into the house of the actress Sharon Tate, the wife of Roman Polanski, and brutally murder and mutilate the very pregnant Tate as well as 4 others in the house. The next night, they commit the same atrocities on an older couple who just happen to live in a house that Charlie had been in, the La Bianca's.

Charlie had them do this to try to get one of his followers, accused of murder, out of jail, by making these look like copy cat murders.

He tried to make them look as if the murders were done by the Black Panthers. Charlie loved the Beatles White Album and took from their "lead" that the "cut" Helter Skelter" was the name for the uprising of the blacks in America who would then kill all of the whites while Charlie and his family would be in a "bottomless pit" to later arise to take over the world and show the blacks who have screwed everything up how it is done.

So, you just told me the story. Then why do I need to read the book?

Guinn's approach is three pronged: Berkeley, Haight Ashbury, drugs, sex, and the disenfranchisement of the decade's youth. For the first time, a biographer of Charlie's has spoken to his school mates, teachers, and his half sister and cousin to try to piece together what made Charles Manson the master manipulator, pathological liar, and psychopath that he became.

Derzeit tritt ein Problem beim Filtern der Rezensionen auf. Ein Kunde 5,0 von 5 Sternen a greater understanding of a sick mind. Nuel Emmons is the author, so these are his words. He only translates into readable print what Charles Manson is trying to relate to us. I have no sympathy for Manson, being where he is, as he is a grown man and is responsible for his own actions. He cannot blame his childhood for the mistakes he made as an adult.

However, I do feel sorry for Charles Manson, the child. Growing up, he was totally confused, and I do have sympathy for him at that stage of his life. However, anyone with even a SHRED of common sense, knows you cannot think like the adult Manson and get away with it for long. Ein Kunde 1,0 von 5 Sternen "Manson" -Not in his own words by a long shot. Nuel Emmons, ex-con, aspiring journalist and two-faced acquaintance of Charlie, covers no new ground in this book. Emmons states himself in the preface that he wasn't allowed to take notes or record Charlie during his interviews with the famous prisoner.

Therefore, the title is misleading. It should read "Manson, in Emmons' words". More of the same rhetoric espoused by Bugliosi and the establishment. Ein Kunde 5,0 von 5 Sternen A ligitimate alter-perspective on one of the most In His Own Words lets Manson shed the "crazy" suit and speak of his impressions of the curious events of his own life up to, and surrounding the remarkable murders. If you are interested in the humanity of an outsider, this book is for you; but be aware, Charles Manson is represented in a much more intelligible fashion than in any other book currently in publication.

One may actually see where the man is coming from. For better or for worse Ein Kunde 5,0 von 5 Sternen A book dedicated to destroying a false myth. When I got this book, I couldn't put it down. It is truly a work of truth, a book dedicated to making people open their eyes. Anyone who is interested in Manson should read this.

It gives a surprisingly great look into the life-style and thoughts of one of society's greatest scapegoats.
