Lake Niger, and the supposed course of the Niger River, is shown flowing westward. This map is based on Ortelius' map of Prester John of The myth of Prester John, the good king defeating the enemies of Christianity, was in part a response to Mongol and Islamic pressures on Christian Europe.

After the death of the elder son of Jodocus Hondius, many of his plates were sold by his widow to Blaeu, but this plate stayed with the family. First published in , this great wall map was among the first to show the new nation from coast to coast. An exquisite map, it distinguished Melish as the leading American map publisher of the second decade and placed American maps on equal footing with those produced by the prestigious firms in London and Paris.
Incorporating data from state and military maps as these became available Melish frequently revised and corrected the plates, limiting each printing to copies. Melish originally planned to include only the portion of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, but decided to add two sheets, in order to show "at a glance the whole extent of the United States territory from sea to sea" Melish, Geographical Description, Philadelphia, Martin and Ristow identify seven states of the edition. Melish published new editions in five states , two states , eight states , two states , and one state for a total of twenty five different issues.
Born in Scotland, Melish settled in the United States in He is credited with bringing American cartography up to world standards. Walter Ristow couldn't heap enough praise on to this map.

Janssonius was one of the first printed maps to include several important place names, such as New Amsterdam, Manbattes a version of Manhattan , Fort Orange Albany , and Plymounth. The area of present day Maine is called Norembegua. With French text on verso. Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae. Split in lower part center fold 11 cm expertly repaired. This is the first state of Jansson's map which is virtually identical to Blaeu's map of Cartographically it improves on the Hondius map of , on which it was derived. The map depicts the English and French colonial interests in the region as depicted by their respective Royal coat of arms and several new colonies are noted.
At the southern end of the Appalachians is a note concerning gold and silver mines. Richly decorated with a large cartouche flanked by Native Americans, compass roses, and galleons. Insulae Americanae in oceano septentrionali. Split in top part center fold expertly repaired. The map is based on the map by Gerritsz. The nomenclature in North America is virtually identical, other than the addition of Virginia on this map.
It reflects the first hand knowledge of Gerritsz. With rhumb lines, sailing ships, compass rose. The cartouche and scales are decorated with putti and an unusual selection of fauna, including snakes, lizards, a sea tortoise and a bat.

After various English voyages, the Dutch appeared in the Strait of Magellan in One of the Dutch pioneering voyages to the Southwest was the one by Jacques Mahu and Simon de Cordes, who were sent out by Rotterdam merchants. The five ships of this fleet were the first Dutch vessels to sail through the Strait of Magellan.

Sailing ships can be seen in the Arabian Sea and the Mediterranean. The geography is reasonably accurate for the time with many place names given.
