This book explains why US leaders failed in Vietnam. They did so because of their timid policies, foolish strategies and ignorance of their enemies. An epic year with an elite airborne rifle company of the st A Riveting, poignant and full of incredible, first-hand battlefield accounts, this book is the Vietnam War era's "Band of Brothers" combat classic. English Professor -- Jeffery P. It's also the best, hands down! This is the most important book you'll read this year. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, it is the personal stories of vets, in their own words.

Not graphic or suspenseful, not particularly unusual or heroic. Hodgins himself rarely if ever takes part in a fire fight or ambush I found the dialogue to be excellent and extremely "real". Hodgins Ford's a great job of describing how you win over people in the absolute worst of circumstances. Although at times he does come across as arrogant, in truth he is doing whatever it takes at the time to get the men under him to give there attention and support. It was the dialogue and inner action between the character's that kept my attention.

When men call you skipper in the Corps there is no greater accolade and his men called him skipper even tough was only a first lieutenant. They trusted him as a brother!!

He's quite technical as to his tactics and what he expects of his platoon. No terrible PTSD-inducing battles. Very informative, very good book, and very factual. The book is about a Marine's experience and I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know, what happened behind the scenes, in planning operations.

The author is brutally honest about other Officer's shortcomings and the reluctance of NCO's, to follow orders. He writes about war and being hampered by field grade Officer's failure to provide timely support for his units. Looked forward to picking it up each time. One of the better first hand accounts.

I gave this book four and a half stars. It was easy to see that a former grunt Lt was truly as concerned about the welfare of his troops as much as himself. A post on a hill defended instead of deserted and none of it s defenders with their names on the memorial wall.

A Marine’s True Story of Duty and Heroism in Vietnam

How great is that! Interesting story of combat and an inside look at what it was and is like to be a Marine Corp Lieutenant leading men in times of danger, discomfort, boredom and stress. An excellent example of the responsibility placed on these young men and the knowledge and skills required to keep their young troops functional and reduce the element of risk to them and to themselves.

A great read and a great example of leadership. One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 1 month ago. Published 2 months ago.
