Please try again later. She is, quite simply, one of the best, especially when it comes to creating complex and interesting characters, if not the most interesting plots. Try any of her books and give it the time and attention it needs. These are not "super hero" reads, nor are they full of needless gore and violence.

I really enjoyed this book. I got it to practice my French reading skills but found that I got so caught up in the story that I forgot what I was supposed to be doing with the book. The characters are fresh and unusual and I think that for an avid reader of my age 67 , that says a lot. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

He also gets inducted into the ruthlessness of the s financ An enjoyable novel about Artur, a Frenchman, who in the s gains a scholarship to a prestigious US university. He also gets inducted into the ruthlessness of the s financial world. Some of the best parts of the novel are vivid depictions of life in New York at the time. The concluding section, with some hugely long paragraphs straddling pages, is a beautifully understated portrayal of someone who has gained worldly success but not emotional fulfilment. The translation from the French is fluent, and you would not know it wasn't originally written in English.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me have an advance review copy. Doubtful, uncertain prose - hard to stick with and difficult to sort through for enjoyable bits. A coming of age story, where the great may not be good enough to give sense to your life. Great story, well written, with fascinating characters.
I was given a digital copy of this book by the publisher Gallic via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review. A drunken professor, a haughty aspiring actress, and a South American con artist and his beautiful sister become the true instruments of his education in the sorrows and sufferings of the heart. For me the weakest link was the central love story -- the object of our young hero's passion remained curiously null and featureless to me, and his attachment to her felt more like a narrative necessity than an actual relationship.
I did think that The Great and the Good would make a terrific film, along the lines of Brooklyn, and the weakness in characterization could be offset by some well-thought-out visuals. Now that he's finally being published in English, let's hope we might see some of his works hit the big time.
