The book focuses on the makers of modern strategy, after all, so there are strong biographical elements in addition to more abstract concepts. Furthermore, the difficulty of defining modern strategy is one of the main questions here, especially as it grows to incorporate guerrilla uprising and nuclear warfare. The book is now slightly out of date due to its age.

Nothing after the cold war, for example. Still, many of the essays still retain value from a historical perspective, and are worth reading. They are also largely self-contained, so the book's length should not be intimidating. It is easy to choose essays which are of the greatest interest. It is a readable history, but also a sound reference work. One side note - one of the essays on early Soviet strategy from the s to the Second World War was written by none other than future Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. It's actually quite good, although, as fortune would have it, Rice did not have to deal with the Soviet Union during her tenure.

Oct 25, Janine Spendlove rated it liked it Shelves: If all you want is a simple military history text, this book is not for you. But if you are a student of worldwide military strategy from the last couple centuries, it is a good, very thorough read. I did not give it 4 stars in that I felt it was not a very "easy" read.

I often found that I had to reread passages to fully "soak in" what was printed. On the whole though, it was a good, informative read. Feb 05, Christopher rated it it was amazing Shelves: In my experience, anthologies are always a sort of coin toss with essays being either very good or very bad, due to the fact that it's a collection of different authors with different ideas and different styles. It's rare to find one where all the essays are great and interesting reads, but this book is one of those. Every major military leade In my experience, anthologies are always a sort of coin toss with essays being either very good or very bad, due to the fact that it's a collection of different authors with different ideas and different styles. Every major military leader and thinker in Western history during this time period is there and topics are varied enough so that it is not always Army tactics that are covered.

It also includes essays on the Navy and Air power that are fascinating. It even includes a chapter on modern revolutionary wars, or insurgencies as we would call them today, that is not to be missed. And, I have to say, there wasn't one essay that I felt was superfluous or boring. The only thing that I would say is that, since this was most recently updated in , it does need to add a few new chapters on robotics and cyberwarfare.

In spite of its age and length, this was a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the development of modern, Western military strategy over the centuries. Mar 21, Art rated it it was amazing. The bible of stragetic thought. It needs updating, with some post cold-war analysis. It is still the single best volume of western military thought. I have read the book numerous times and it still remains solid. Nov 04, John Leven rated it it was ok Shelves: Initially, I was very excited for this sweeping page compilation of military strategy from over 25 expert contributors.

However, by about pages in, it became clear that I was NOT going to come away from this book with tried-and-true principals that I could transplant from military strategy to everyday life. Not only did I find this book completely impractical, but also an extremely laborious to read. And not in the good way. A book of this size normally takes me about a month, but this Initially, I was very excited for this sweeping page compilation of military strategy from over 25 expert contributors.

A book of this size normally takes me about a month, but this one took nearly 3 months because of how much I avoided reading it.
